Remote Controlled Cars As A Hobby
Almost any vehicle can be modelled, powered by a motor and be controlled from a remote handset. However, most
people will start by building a remote controlled car. The knowledge that will be gained from building remote
controlled cars will permit you to build other models with a higher degree of success. A lot of people like the
idea of remote controlled cars as a hobby.
Remote Controlled Cars As A Hobby
The advantage of having remote controlled cars as a hobby is that if model (not toy) develops a fault, the worst
thing that can happen is that you will have to go and get it. However, if your remote controlled helicopter
develops a fault it could be totally destroyed and if your ocean-going liner goes wrong, you may never see it again
unless you are a strong swimmer.
However, problems will be fewer, less severe and farther between, the more knowledge of RC car kits you have and
you can gain this knowledge by building a few remote controlled cars first. If your ultimate goal is to build a
remote controlled helicopter, you could build a few model car kits first of all, and then sell them in order to buy
the more expensive parts to make the RC helicopter.
Before you start building your own RC cars, you will probably buy a pre-made model or a car kit. This is an
excellent way of starting because you will also need to gain experience using the controls. After all, you can just
as easily wreck a model by not knowing how to handle it as you can by not constructing it properly.
These are the two skills that you will need before it is worth attempting an ambitious project like a large
scale aeroplane or helicopter. Once you have played with your remote control car for a few days or weeks, it will
probably become a little boring because cheap starter RC cars do not have a lot of features, but they can teach you
a lot without your mistakes costing you the Earth.
Anyway, when this point comes, and it surely will, take your car apart. Study how it was put together.
Investigate how the motor drives the wheels, how the steering works and how each unit is assembled into an RC car.
You can learn a lot from this. Make notes and then re-assemble it. Make sure that it works.
Next time it becomes boring, take it apart again and try to make a few modifications to make it go faster or be
more easily controlled. Read up on the subject by buying magazines, joining an enthusiasts' club or by joining
Internet newsletters and forums. Make a few modifications even if you just buy a better piece and swap it for the
standard one.
If you got satisfaction from that, buy a nitro remote control car kit or get a set of plans and
build a remote controlled car from scratch. There are two ways of tackling this. Either keep it simple or be really
ambitious. If you keep it simple, you will probably have to build a more ambitious model pretty soon, but if you
start off ambitiously, then it could be an on-going project for as long as you want - years, if you
like.
Imagine the fun you could have constructing a mammoth 1:5 scale Aston Martin? 1:5 scale RC cars are the latest rage in model cars and
trucks. 1:5 is a huge scale compared to little 1:15 electric remote control cars most people start with with
their tiny battery powered electric engines.
I:5 scale RC cars can be three feet long and a foot high with real, but miniature, petrol radio controlled
engines in them. A petrol engine, a clutch, gears, carburettors, manifold, you name it - just like the real thing.
If you want
When you have built something, take it to RC racing competitions or / and exhibit it in shows. Lots of RC
enthusiasts like to race RC cars and meet kindred spirits there. You will learn a lot from the old hands. If your
car is really nice, it may win prizes and people will offer to buy it from you.
This allows you to make enough money to put your newly-found knowledge about remote controlled cars into
another, better, more ambitious project. Soon, you will become an expert on RC cars and the sport of racing RC cars
yourself and you may find that while you once considered remote controlled cars as a hobby, you can turn it into a
business or move onto that RC helicopter or plane you always wanted to build.
